 Vision

As our city has developed from Dayuan, to Anping, to Fucheng, to Tainan over the last 400 years, – it has always been diverse and outward-looking. In the 85 years since our school’s founding, its identity has evolved too: from Tainan Technical College in 1931, to Taiwan Provincial College of Engineering in 1946, Taiwan Provincial Cheng Kung University in 1956, and National Cheng Kung University in 1971. Named after Zheng Chenggong (Koxinga), a heroic pioneer of Taiwan’s development, NCKU’s history has been closely bound up with the changes that have affected our nation and society. While training countless talented students, the school has grown symbiotically with the city of Tainan, staying in touch with the pulse of society and forging links throughout the world. Four hundred years ago, people from afar came to Anping, Tainan, and now NCKU is reaching out from this historic city as a university with a pragmatic academic climate, solid research strengths, an internationalized learning environment, interdisciplinary innovation, effective academia–industry cooperation and a pragmatic approach to issues – a school that is able to actively exert a positive influence in different sectors in Taiwan and also embrace the world. For the future, NCKU aims to be a university that is the pride of Taiwan and an inspiration to Tainan, an institution that our partner schools respect and are happy to work with. NCKU is positioned as a university of global importance that develops high quality, well-rounded citizens.

 Features

[Holistic Education to Cultivate World-class Talents]

NCKU values holistic education, providing creative and lively instruction that combines large- and small-class study and emphasizes interdisciplinary learning. Selected courses taught entirely in English are offered in 27 departments. The school seeks to cultivate world-class, internationally competitive individuals with sincerity and high moral integrity, characteristics that put NCKU graduates among the candidates most sought after by the business community. Having laid down a solid foundation in engineering and then expanded into liberal arts and science, NCKU gradually developed into a comprehensive university, establishing colleges such as Medicine and Social Sciences, and even an Art Center and a Museum. The school has repeatedly received funding from the Ministry of Education under the “Aim for the Top University Project" and is widely recognized as a leading university in Taiwan. Looking to the future, NCKU aims to become a worldclass research university with equal emphasis on outstanding teaching quality. Our development strategy has three foci: human resource development, developing distinctive academic strengths, and sustainable infrastructure, in order to keep abreast of other top universities in the world.

[Academic Quality]

The outstanding faculty and abundant teaching resources at NCKU have helped create extraordinary research achievements in both quality and quantity terms. According to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database for 2016, in 16 disciplines the number of NCKU papers cited in 10 years was among the top 1% of research institutes worldwide, and also ranked second in Taiwan. Such achievements only encourage the students and faculty at NCKU to redouble their research efforts and go on to even greater success.

[Encouraging Creative Thinking]

The Research and Services Headquarters at NCKU is the first unit of its kind in Taiwan higher education. It integrates school resources to maintain close cooperation with industry and our home city, working through eight cutting-edge research centers to promote academia–industry cooperation for innovation. They are the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences, the Research Center for Energy Technology and Strategy, the Advanced Optoelectronic Technology Center, the University Center for Bioscience and Biotechnology, the Center for Micro/Nano Science and Technology, the Center of Infectious Disease and Signaling Research, the Medical Device Innovation Center, and the Sustainable Environment Research Laboratories. The aim is to ensure that research results make a real contribution to Taiwan by meeting the needs of both industry and society.
