Distinguished Professor Tang shared the stories of EB patients and expresses his gratitude to the research team and sponsors.
On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the Overseas Students and Scholars Services Division (OSSS) of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) had the great honor of inviting Professor Ming-Jer Tang, Distinguished Professor at the Institute of Physiology, to share insights into his impactful and socially driven initiative—the International Center for Wound Repair and Regeneration (hereinafter referred as to iWRR.)
The event brought together 21 faculty members and researchers from within and outside NCKU, all drawn by a shared interest in iWRR’s mission and accomplishments. Professor Tang’s presentation highlighted the center’s commitment to improving wound care services, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and delivering life-changing medical assistance to underserved communities both locally and globally.
A key focus of the talk was iWRR’s ongoing research on Epidermolytic Bullosa (EB)—a rare and debilitating genetic skin disorder. iWRR has made significant strides in advancing medical treatments for EB and enhancing the quality of life for patients with rare diseases. What makes this initiative particularly meaningful is its holistic, human-centered approach: the research team extends their care beyond physical healing, reaching into patients' emotional and psychological well-being.
The team fostered a healing environment that reminded patients they were not alone by integrating music, art, and therapeutic expression. Their work built a sense of community and hope, helping individuals with rare diseases realize that others—across the world—faced similar challenges, walking alongside them in strength and solidarity.
These stories deeply moved participants and expressed great admiration for iWRR’s efforts. Many described the session as inspiring, empathetic, and a powerful reminder of the university's potential to make a real-world impact.
Prof. Tang talked about the collaboration with overseas institutions.
