【Prof. George T. C. Chiu from Purdue University Shares Invaluable Insights with NCKU Students】

On February 20th, Prof. George T. C. Chiu, Assistant Dean for Global Engineering Programs of Purdue University, visited NCKU and joined a thought-provoking lunchtime discussion with students enrolled in the NCKU - Purdue Dual Degree Programs. Professor Chiu offered some advice and his observations about studying and living in the United States.

His first piece of advice was urging students to develop critical thinking skills and self-initiative. “You should actively engage in interacting with professors and focus on learning during your senior year at Purdue,” he said. Building a positive relationship with professors can significantly enhance graduate school applications. Then he emphasized that students should acknowledge the importance of excelling in current tasks, enhancing capabilities, and expanding skill sets. Being fully equipped to seize unexpected opportunities is essential for students. Adequate preparation enables them to capitalize on such opportunities and to do so with maximum effectiveness.

He also shared that while studying in Engineering Programs, it is essential to recognize that engineering encompasses more than just techniques. What cultivates a great engineering process is not only about technical, but integrating elements such as society, family, and economics into it. “Don't limit yourself, and don't follow the same path as everyone else.” He continued, “Nothing is final.” And he gave the example of the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), encouraged students to stay ahead of the curve by anticipating future trends.

As the discussion drew to a close, Prof. Chiu reminded students who is about to set off on their journeys to the United States this summer to approach their experience with an open mind, embracing the differences in culture and lifestyle.  The discussion concluded with resounding applause, as students expressed their gratitude for the invaluable insights shared by Prof. Chiu.
