【A visit from H. E. Prime Minister Russell Dlamini of the Kingdom of Eswatini】

H. E. Prime Minister Russell Dlamini of the Kingdom of Eswatini led a delegation to National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) on March 22nd, 2024 to discuss disaster prevention technology education and disaster control and management mechanisms among governmental units, local communities, and expert teams. After the in-depth discussion, the delegation had a pleasant interaction with 29 Eswatini students from Tainan City at NCKU Banyan Garden.

NCKU Executive Vice President Hong-Chen Chen in his welcome address stated that NCKU and the Kingdom of Eswatini have fostered fruitful exchanges in talent cultivation. Among the many students, NCKU has had the special honor of hosting H. E. Prime Minister Dlamini in August and September 2022 through the 3-week Disaster Prevention Technology and Management Program jointly launched by NCKU and Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund. NCKU also has had the pleasure to host Prince Sewele Mphumelelo Dlamini who is a graduate of our International Master Program on Natural Hazards Mitigation and Management in 2019 and continues to pursuit a PhD degree in NCKU. In the past 5 years, 70 students from Eswatini have undertaken degree programs at NCKU, mainly in Nursing and Civil Engineering. These educational accomplishments possess significant potential for benefiting the next generation.

H. E. Prime Minister Dlamini stated that Taiwan has greatly improved its resilience in disaster prevention and reducing disaster losses through advanced disaster prevention technology and early warning measures. He therefore hopes that Eswatini will continue to make progress in the field of disaster prevention and promote the exchange of technology and talent training based on such good exchanges with Taiwan. H. E. Prime Minister Dlamini also expressed appreciation for NCKU’s caring for students from the Kingdom of Eswatini. H. E. Prime Minister Dlamini and Executive Vice President Chen jointly hope to continue to promote the Disaster Prevention Technology and Management Program and increase two-way exchanges of scholars and experts.

The delegation was received by Prof. Hong-Chen Chen, Executive Vice President, Prof. Sun-Yuan Hsieh, Vice President for International Affairs, Prof. Liang-Ming Whang, Director General of Innovation Headquarters, Prof. Shun-Fen Tzeng, Associate Vice President for Research & Development, Prof. Hsiao-Wen Wang, Director of Disaster Prevention Research Center, Prof. Yun-Chung Tsang, Deputy Director of Disaster Prevention Research Center, Prof. Shin-Ping Lee, Deputy Director of Disaster Prevention Research Center, Dr. Yu-Shiu Chen, Chief of Planning Division of Disaster Prevention Research Center, Dr. Yun-Rong Tsai, Chief of Innovation & Incubation Division of Disaster Prevention Research Center, and Assoc. Prof. Chia-Hsiang Lin, Director of the International Relations Division, Office of International Affairs.

The delegation includes Madame Philile Dlamini, H.R.H. Prince Lonkhokhela who is also the Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, Inkhosikati LaMabuza Emelda, Ambassador Promise Sithembiso Msibi of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Eswatini, Principal Secretary Mr. Bertram Stewart of Prime Minister’s Office, Chief Mr. Swazi Dlamini of State Protocol, and Executive Manager Mr. Martin Masilela of Eswatini Investment Promotion Authority (EIPA).
