NCKU’s IJRL Team Cutting-Edge Collaboration at Technical University of Darmstadt Sets New Research Milestone

Professor Jen-Sue Chen, Distinguish Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and her doctoral student have been worked closely with Prof. Dr. Lambert Alff ’s research team, the Advanced Thin Film Technology (ATFT) Laboratory, of the Technical University of Darmstadt (TUDa) in Germany through the International Joint Research Labs (IJRL) initiative between NCKU and TUDa since 2023. This collaboration aligns with NCKU faculty to become a globally influential university that nurtures well-rounded individuals of exceptional caliber and the project leverages electronic materials and neuromorphic technologies to develop innovative materials for future high-performance AI chips.

The Advanced Thin Film Technology (ATFT) Laboratory at the Technical University of Darmstadt is at the forefront of research and development in the field of novel materials and material combinations for application in oxide electronics. The laboratory focuses on the synthesis of thin-film materials and the production of model components to explore their potential applications. This Laboratory is committed to pushing the boundaries of thin-film technology and aims to be among the world's leading groups in this field. Through its dedication to innovation and cutting-edge research, the laboratory continues to contribute to advancements in oxide electronics and integrated devices.

TU Darmstadt, also known as the Darmstadt University of Technology, is located in Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany, and is known as the "City of Science " in Germany. The university was established in 1877 and has a strong academic reputation in the fields of engineering, natural sciences, and architecture. It is the first public university to be independently established in the Federal Republic of Germany since its inception. TU Darmstadt has been selected twice for the German Universities Excellence Initiative and is a member of the TU9, an alliance of nine excellent technical universities in Germany. In 1882, the world's first electrical engineering department was established at TU Darmstadt. The university comprises 13 faculties, 4 interdisciplinary departments, and 5 special research areas, offering approximately 100 study programs.

The NCKU-TU Darmstadt partnership was first initiated in 1987, and the TU Darmstadt Asia Office was launched at NCKU in 2019 as the first German university office established in Taiwan. The collaboration between both universities spans across diverse disciplines, including physics, space science, mechanics, material science, civil engineering, architecture, hydraulics, and electrical engineering.
