The Division of Overseas Recruitment and Admission (ORA) of Office of International Affairs (OIA), NCKU held the NCKU Chinese Language Scholarship Program and Admission Briefing Session in Chinese Language Center (CLC), NCKU on Dec.21, 2023. The session focused on the scholarship, which aims at encouraging current CLC students to pursue their Master's or Doctoral degrees at NCKU. This is the 2nd briefing session since the scholarship program was launched, and this year the number of participants doubled, which indicates an increasing interest in CLC students to apply for Degrees for International Students.
The briefing session was divided into four parts. Ms. Melody Tseng from ORA began with the information and timeline of the scholarship and how it’s related to International Students' Application. Followed by an introduction about NCKU presented by the current Ph.D. candidate from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, NCKU - Dr. Ymir M. Garcia, who is also an Assistant Professor at Mapua University in The Philippines. Dr. Garcia shared that the reasons he chose to pursue his Ph.D. degree at NCKU include the fruitful international collaboration, professional teaching, and how accommodating people in Tainan are. Besides, he pointed out that NCKU has advantages in multiple dimensions - from the industrial viewpoint, NCKU is ranked Top 1 by THE World University Rankings 2024 in “Industry (Income & Patents)”, and won the consecutive 9th year of Championship for the Most Favored Graduates Award, confirming that NCKU not only present exceptional academic achievements (ranked in second place for the number of Highly Cited Papers in Taiwan by ESI) but also has a strong connection and positive influence in the industrial realm. Moreover, NCKU is dedicated to providing world-class resources/good scholarships/a better-than-average student-to-faculty ratio, facilitating innovation, and an international & friendly campus where diversity is celebrated.
Ms. Makubule Asena Ayan from Türkiye, the former recipient of the Scholarship also shared with us her valuable experience of pursuing her Master's degree in the Department of Taiwanese Literature, NCKU; she enjoyed learning from the Taiwanese perspective, immersing herself in the international environment and interdisciplinary study, she gave some useful tips and suggestions about studying at NCKU to CLC students.
In the Q&A, many CLC students showed their high interest in pursuing a graduate degree at NCKU by reconfirming their eligibility and asking about further procedures/information about the Scholarship Program.
Although the session ended, a booth was set up outside the classroom on Dec.21~22. CLC students, who are from various countries, came to the booth to get the Scholarship Program flyer and to learn more about it with ORA staff; many said they would consider the program as it can certainly lower some financial burden in the way of applying for NCKU graduate degrees.
