UCI and NCKU to Broaden Research and Education Collaborations in Engineering

 

Delegates from Samueli School of Engineering, University of California, Irvine (UCI) visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) on December 14th to discuss the feasibility of cooperative research and dual degree programs in engineering. Since 2022, the two universities have been conducting the Taiwan Huayu BEST Program, which is supported by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education and promotes a variety of language and cultural activities at UCI and NCKU. Regarding scientific collaboration, the two universities have co-authored publications mainly in areas including biochemistry, chemistry, physics, and astronomy.  The constructive conversation is intended to widen the scope of the partnership to engineering.

Dr. Lily Wu, Faculty Director of International Programs, Samueli School of Engineering proposed a 3+2 program in Master of Engineering and the possibility of a 4+1 pathway program into UCI professional master degree programs. Dr. Quoc-Viet(QV) Dang, Assistant Professor of Teaching, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science shared about his research projects in e-learning, data analysis, autonomous vehicle racing, and cyber-physical systems. Ms. Amy Pham, MECPS Program Director, Center for Embedded Cyber-Physical Systems stated the importance of training students in the skills and hands-on practices of embedded computer, cyber-physical systems design, and evaluation.

Professor Shen-Haw Ju, Vice Dean of the College of Engineering, NCKU welcomed the delegation and stated his support for UCI Engineering's suggestions. According to him, the NCKU College of Engineering offers a wide range of engineering-related professions and encourages multidisciplinary cooperation.   He is enthusiastic about offering students with opportunities for various foreign programs to improve NCKU students' worldwide competitiveness.

The discussion participants from NCKU include Prof. Shen-Haw Ju, Vice Dean of College of Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Chia-Hsiang Lin, Director of Division of International Relations, Prof. Yung-Yu Chen, Chair of Systems and Naval Mechatronic Engineering, and Prof. Chih-Hsing Liu, Vice Chair of Department of Mechanical Engineering. University of California, Irvine, founded in 1965, is located Orange County, one of the world’s safest and most economically vibrant communities. UCI has more than 36,000 students and offers 224 degree programs.
