【 University of Hawai'i System President Visits NCKU to Deepen Research and Education Collaboration】
President David Lassner of the University of Hawai'i System (UH) visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) on November 24th to exchange viewpoints on a university’s role in social development and the practices of international cooperation in sustainability. Based on the current co-publications and the strengths of UH and NCKU, the two universities hope to expand collaboration in three strategic disciplines: Cyber and Information Technology, Medicine, and Physics and Astronomy.

Professor Hong-Chen Chen, Executive Vice President of NCKU, praised the University of Hawai'i System for demonstrating its leadership in research and education, as well as policies that address social needs. He noted that the two universities share the same values in terms of actively reaching out to local communities and supporting social development. He added that NCKU values global partnerships and is committed to global talent circulation and research application promotion through national and university-level initiatives.
President Lassner of UH shared the practices and policies of UH in his remarks and presentation. UH protects and spreads the traditional Hawaiian culture through programs in history, language, and culture. Education combines awareness and respect for local culture. For example, students are urged to approach medical treatment recovery in a culturally appropriate manner. On the other hand, as UH has very high racial diversity, the university supports inclusiveness and diversity.

The discussion participants from NCKU include Vice President Chuan-Pu Liu for Research & Development, Associate Vice President Sherry Shu-Jung Hu for International Affairs, Dean Pau-Choo Chung of College of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Medical Secretary for Administration Affairs Prof. Shih-Min Wang of College of Medicine, Director Yi Yang of Science Education Center, College of Science. University of Hawai'i System is the Hawai'i State’s major higher education system, consisting of three universities, seven community colleges and community-based learning centers across the Hawaiian Islands, educating over 50,000 students each year. NCKU and UH at Mānoa have 54 co-authored publications between 2018 and 2023. 38.9% of the co-publications are in Physics and Astronomy, while 31.5% are in Medicine.
