National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) participated in Taiwan study fairs and conducted outreach visits across Japan’s Kanto region from 12 to 17 June 2026. The delegation was led by Associate Vice President for International Affairs Sherry Shu-Jung Hu, joined by Charlotte Li and Tim Yang of the Office of International Affairs.
The education fair was conducted in five secondary schools — Jumonji Junior and Senior High School, Seigakuin High School, Tokyo Chinese School, Yokohama Overseas Chinese School, and Toyo University Ushiku Senior High School — interacting with over 300 students and parents. Activities included in-class presentations, booth consultations, and school discussion forums, through which the team introduced NCKU’s academic strengths, admission procedures, tuition and living costs in Tainan, and key academic disciplines.

Both Tokyo Chinese School and Yokohama Overseas Chinese School drew students who already spoke conversational Mandarin and came to the booth with focused, specific questions about admission and campus life. Parents at Yokohama in particular also raised questions about NCKU’s semiconductor-related programs, pointing to Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and the university’s proximity to the Southern Science Park as factors in their interest.

At Seigakuin High School, many parents were pleasantly surprised by Taiwan’s competitive tuition and living costs compared to those in Japan. A forum session with school leadership at Toyo University Ushiku Senior High School rounded out the school visits, where the team learned that a notable share of the school’s overseas-bound graduates in 2025 had chosen Taiwan as their destination for higher education.

In between school engagements, the delegation met with two NCKU alumni in Tokyo: Prof. Heng-Yi Teah at the University of Tokyo, and Mr. Yu-Jie Zheng, an education advisor at an international education agency. Both alumni offered valuable on-the-ground perspectives on Japanese students’ expectations when considering overseas study, and pointed to alumni-based outreach as a key avenue for strengthening NCKU’s presence and appeal in Japan.
