【NCKU OIA eNews】 NCKU Hosts “Czechia and Taiwan: So Far Yet So Close” to Inspire Students to Embrace Global Perspectives

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) reaffirmed its commitment to fostering global citizenship by hosting a dynamic session titled “Czechia and Taiwan: So Far Yet So Close”. The lecture, part of the 2025 Global Perspective Lectures (GPL) organized by the Office of International Affairs (OIA), welcomed students and faculty on October 17.


 

Mr. David Steinke, Representative of the Czech Economic and Cultural Office in Taiwan, highlights key research areas for future Taiwan–Czech cooperation during his lecture.

The distinguished speaker for the event was Mr. David Steinke, Representative of the Czech Economic and Cultural Office in Taiwan. Mr. Steinke shared witty and insightful reflections on the cultural connections between Czechia and Taiwan. Drawing from his three years of experience living in Taiwan, he highlighted the contrasts and parallels between the two nations, covering topics from education and gastronomy to daily life and core values. Interestingly, Mr. Steinke revealed that his first impression of Taiwan was the pangolin, which he noted as a symbol of the country’s unique biodiversity and dedication to conservation.

Drawing from his three years of experience living in Taiwan, Mr. Steinke highlighted the contrasts and parallels between the two nations, from education and gastronomy to daily life and values. He also introduced Czech culture through vivid stories and travel recommendations—ranging from charming historic towns to beautiful churches and architectural landmarks that showcase Czechia’s deep artistic and cultural heritage.

The session concluded with a lively Q&A, where students engaged in open dialogue about cultural exchange and global learning. Mr. Steinke encouraged everyone to step outside the comfort zones and discover the world with curiosity and empathy.
